Using a Donor-Advised Fund 

 

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is one of the easiest, most tax-efficient ways for US taxpayers to support charitable organizations worldwide.
 

Because US tax law requires charities to hold 501(c)(3) public charity status for contributions to be tax-deductible, US donors generally cannot make direct, tax-deductible gifts to foreign charitable organizations. A Donor-Advised Fund bridges this gap seamlessly, allowing you to maximize your impact while receiving an immediate US tax deduction.
 

What is a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?
 

A Donor-Advised Fund is a dedicated charitable giving account established with a US public charity (known as a DAF sponsor, such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, or community foundations).
 

When you contribute to our DAF, you are making an irrevocable gift to a US 501(c)(3) public charity. In return, you receive an immediate tax deduction, and the funds are designated to grant out to our programs overseas.

  • Use the donation form below to make your gift. Your payment is processed directly by our US partner DAF sponsor, The Shrimala Fund, a registered 501(c)(3) public charity.
     

  • Receive Your US Tax Receipt
     

  • Your DAF contribution is irrevocable under US law, making it eligible for an immediate tax deduction. The Shrimala Fund (through its sponsor, Schwab) will issue your official US tax receipt immediately via email.
     

  • Vetting & Compliance Review
     

  • Under US IRS regulations, the DAF sponsor ensures grant compliance for overseas distributions using established frameworks:
     

    • Equivalency Determination (ED): Verifying that our overseas organization operates equivalently to a US 501(c)(3) public charity.

    • Expenditure Responsibility (ER): Providing oversight to confirm all grant funds are used exclusively for charitable purpose.

    • Grant Granting & Impact
       

  • Once cleared, the funds in the DAF are granted directly to our overseas organization to support our programs and operations on the ground.

  1. Log in to your DAF sponsor portal (e.g., Schwab Charitable, Fidelity Charitable, BNY Mellon, or your local community foundation, eg).

  2. Select Recommend a Grant.

  3. Search for our US partner DAF entity: The Shrimala Fund (contact us for EIN)

  4. Specify the grant amount and submit your recommendation.
